US President Donald Trump has sent mixed messages ahead of a crucial trade meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström at the White House today.

Trump has called on the EU to drop all “tariffs, barriers and subsidies”, hours after he promised billions of dollars in aid to US farmers to mitigate the impact of a trade war.

Trump has tweeted: “Tariffs are the greatest! Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs. It’s as simple as that — and everybody’s talking! Remember, we are the “piggy bank” that’s being robbed. All will be Great!”

Speaking ahead of the White House talks, Juncker also told media that he was “not very optimistic”.

Wall Street stocks has been mixed on open. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was earlier down 50 points to 25,191.89. The S&P 500 was also flat. Major European shares were trading in the red as well. The FTSE 100 was down 0.6 per cent.
