Officers have shot a man in Wimbledon today during a “pre-planned” police operation. Witnesses have stated that the suspect was shot in an exchange of fire with police after a stake-out outside a Sainsbury’s store.

The condition of the man who has suffered a gunshot wound is unknown, however, another man was arrested for conspiracy to rob, police added.

The Met has stated: “ [The shot man] has been taken by London ambulance service to a London hospital. We await an update on his condition.”

A witness described how police swooped moments after a white armoured cash delivery van pulled up outside a Sainsbury’s Local in Haydons Road.

He said: “Within two seconds there was an altercation with two armed robbers. One of them ran into a cul-de-sac but when he saw he wasn’t going anywhere he shot back at the police and they shot him. It was anything from seven to 11 shots. We hit the deck.”
