A student at Oxford University has tested positive for coronavirus after returning to the UK from an overseas trip and has self-isolated.

The spokesman from Oxford University said, “We understand that students and staff may be worried about friends and family members in affected areas around the world, and our thoughts go to all those affected by this outbreak.

“One student at the university has tested positive for coronavirus and is being offered all the necessary support.

“Public Health England (PHE) has advised the University that the risk to other students and staff is very low and that university and college activities can continue as normal.

“We ask that all students and staff support their fellow friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

“Harassment and discrimination of any kind, including racial harassment, are totally unacceptable at the university.”

On Saturday night the number of coronavirus cases rose to 209 in the UK by 45

Coronavirus currently has a mortality rate of 15% for people aged over 80, so far two people have died in the UK from coronavirus.

Under new government guidelines to tackle the rise of the coronavirus outbreak, elderly people will be told to stay at home.

Government sources have said the elderly need to be prepared for “social distancing” policies, which are to be announced next week in parliament.

The Department for Health warned that the elderly could be “cut off” from the world as advice will be to stay clear of crowded areas and stay at home.

A leading microbiologist has warned coronavirus could peak by Easter and millions could be infected between March and June.

Microbiologist Peter Piot has said the threat is not over hyped as cases appear to be doubling each week and has suggested there are most likely a few thousand in the UK who already have coronavirus.
