Russia is preparing a potential armed “provocation” on Polish territory in an attempt to test NATO’s response and destabilise Western support for Ukraine, according to US intelligence assessments cited by Polish security sources.
Officials told Polish media outlet Onet that Washington has issued multiple warnings about possible Russian strikes on critical infrastructure, including drone and missile attacks, as well as the possibility of a limited cross-border incursion involving Russian or Belarusian forces.
The alleged operation, which Western intelligence sources fear could unfold within months, is said to be designed to pressure NATO into scaling back military assistance to Ukraine by triggering a crisis on the alliance’s eastern flank.
According to Polish security sources, scenarios under discussion include drone strikes on power stations, simulated air raids designed to provoke air defence responses, and hybrid operations along the border region.
More alarmingly, intelligence officials have not ruled out a limited incursion from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave or from Belarusian territory.
Such an operation could be disguised as an accident or navigational error, including claims of GPS malfunction or mistaken military activity, in what analysts describe as a potential “false flag” scenario.
The strategic objective, sources say, would be to force NATO into negotiations rather than immediate military retaliation, thereby weakening Western unity and support for Kyiv.
Officials familiar with the intelligence assessments said Moscow’s goal would be to portray NATO as a “paper tiger” while avoiding full-scale war.
Multiple sources, including a Polish defence ministry figure, a NATO ambassador, and a Baltic security official, reportedly confirmed the seriousness of the threat.
One source close to the Polish presidency said the United States “systematically informs Poland about ever-new Russian plans for a conventional attack on NATO’s eastern flank”.
The warning comes amid renewed Russian strikes on Ukraine, including overnight attacks on Kyiv that killed at least 18 people and damaged civilian infrastructure in an 11-hour bombardment.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the attacks as “barbaric”, saying they demonstrated Vladimir Putin’s continued determination to inflict suffering while Ukraine seeks peace.
Moscow has said the strikes were retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.
Poland, which borders both Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, is considered one of NATO’s most exposed frontline states and a key hub for military aid to Ukraine.
The alliance has stepped up deterrence measures, including recent US-led naval exercises in the Baltic region and German air force warnings that Kaliningrad could be a target in any response to aggression.
Poland has also conducted its own military exercises designed to demonstrate a rapid and overwhelming NATO counter-response.
Analysts warn that even a limited cross-border incident could carry a high risk of escalation given the density of NATO forces in the region and heightened political tensions.
While Russia has not commented on the specific allegations, Western officials say the combination of hybrid tactics, cyber operations and conventional pressure remains a central feature of Moscow’s strategy along NATO’s eastern flank.
The developments are likely to intensify diplomatic pressure within the alliance as member states weigh deterrence, escalation risks and continued support for Ukraine in an increasingly volatile security environment.
