The Metropolitan Police have announced a significant increase in armed patrols across London to enhance the safety and security of Jewish communities as they prepare for Passover.
This action was prompted by a troubling arson attack that occurred in Golders Green, where three ambulances belonging to Hatzolah, a Jewish emergency medical service, were deliberately set on fire outside a local synagogue in the early hours of Monday morning.
Commissioner Mark Rowley revealed that, as part of this security surge, 264 additional officers will be deployed across the city.
In response to the rising threats, the police will bolster their presence with armed patrols that are equipped not only with firearms but also with Tasers. In addition, the police will utilise drones for aerial surveillance and include mounted units to provide a visible reassurance in the community. This enhanced security operation will also involve closer cooperation with the Community Security Trust, an organisation dedicated to protecting Jewish communities in the UK.
In the aftermath of the attack, investigators believe that three suspects were involved, and they are currently pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to identify and apprehend those responsible. The situation is particularly concerning, as a previously unknown group named Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for the arson. Officials are actively assessing potential connections between this group and Iran. However, Commissioner Rowley emphasised that it is premature to attribute the attack directly to the Iranian government at this time.
To ensure the safety of community members, security measures will be significantly heightened at synagogues, schools, and community centres across London. The police are committed to sharing intelligence with Jewish leaders daily to foster a strong collaborative approach to community safety.
Addressing the community, Rowley stated, “There is no ‘us and them.’ This is an attack on a British community.” His remarks highlight the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of such threats, reinforcing law enforcement’s commitment to protecting all communities within the capital.
