Iran warns Ukraine has ‘entered the war’ and threatens a direct attack

Iran has recently issued a stark warning that it may consider targeting Ukraine directly.

The Iranian government has accused Kyiv of providing Israel with advanced drone-interceptor technology amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

This serious threat was articulated by Ebrahim Azizi, who serves as the head of Iran’s National Security Committee in parliament. He announced on March 14 via a post on X.

In his statement, Azizi alleged that Ukraine has effectively become a participant in the ongoing conflict by supplying unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to Israel, suggesting that such actions have crossed a line.

He pointed to Article 51 of the UN Charter, arguing that this provision on self-defence implies that Ukraine’s territory has turned into a “legitimate target” for Iran’s military forces.

The context for these remarks stems from growing reports highlighting Ukraine’s significant role in developing counter-drone technology.

This technology has been notably enhanced during Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian military attacks.

Additionally, reports indicate that Ukrainian specialists, who have gained valuable experience in intercepting Iranian-designed Shahed drones during the conflict with Russia, were deployed to the Middle East. They were sent to support American military facilities in Jordan following a request from Washington to help counter aerial threats.

Moreover, numerous Western media outlets have begun to explore developments indicating that the United States and at least one Gulf state are assessing the potential acquisition of Ukrainian interceptor drones.

These drones are viewed as a financially viable and effective alternative to traditional air defence systems for neutralising Shahed-type uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), which have been used extensively in various conflict zones.

This escalation in tensions highlights the growing animosity between Iran and Israel, particularly following a series of direct military exchanges earlier this year.

Ukrainian officials have vocally condemned Iran for its role in supplying Russia with Shahed drones, which have been deployed against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure since the beginning of the invasion in 2022. Iran’s latest warning signals a widening perception of Ukraine’s involvement in the regional conflict, illustrating the complex geopolitical landscape that has emerged from these intertwined conflicts.
