Sir Richard Branson’s company Virgin Galactic have announced they’ve struck a deal with Rolls-Royce to develop a supersonic aircraft.

The aircraft will travel three times the speed of sound and Rolls-Royce will collaborate in developing engine propulsion technology for the commercial plane.

The aircraft designs can carry 19 passengers at 60,000 ft and hit Mach 3 which is three times the sound of speed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are working with Virgin Galactic in outlining a certified framework, said chief space officer George Whitesides.

He said, “We are pleased to collaborate with the innovative team at Rolls-Royce as we strive to develop sustainable, cutting-edge propulsion systems for the aircraft, and we are pleased to be working with the FAA to ensure our designs can make a practical impact from the start.

“We have made great progress so far, and we look forward to opening up a new frontier in high-speed travel.”
