A Tory MP has come out and said that Boris Johnson “cannot be the force for stability” that the country needs.

Tory MP George Freeman, who is backing Penny Mordaunt in the leadership race, has said that she would “play a key role” in putting in place a “top team” who can come together and deliver for the country.

“We’re in a very different situation from the summer and even from three years ago when Boris Johnson was elected.

“We now face a very serious economic and international crisis and I think the truth is that we’re looking for a unity cabinet.

Freeman said Mordaunt would play a “key role” in putting that top team together.

He added, “She has a very strong compassionate Conservative background.
