The Doha based Qatar Airlines are set to lay off a “substantial” amount of their staff including cabin crew due to the global impact of the pandemic.

In a leaked emailed memo from the CEO, Akbar Al Baker dated on Sunday said, “The global outlook for our industry looks grim and many airlines are closing or significantly reducing operations.

“Now, we have to face a new reality, where many borders are closed, rendering many of our destinations closed and aircraft grounded as a result, with no foreseeable outlook for immediate, positive change.”

The airline sent a statement to the AP news agency on Wednesday, saying, “The unparalleled impact on our industry has caused significant challenges for all airlines and we must act decisively to protect the future of our business.”

Virgin Atlantic also announced on Tuesday that they are set to axe 3,000 jobs in the UK and the airline will quit all operation at Gatwick Airport.

The shock announcement comes after other airlines have been forced to cut staff members and British Airways could also be set to leave Gatwick Airport.
