Nationalists on edge as Tories gain ground before crunch vote

The SNP’s dominance in the Aberdeen South by-election is facing a fresh challenge after a surge of betting support for the Conservatives dramatically narrowed the race with just days to go before polling day.

Punters have increasingly backed the Tories to pull off an upset on June 18, with bookmakers reporting a significant shift in sentiment as the campaign enters its final stretch.

According to the latest market data, a striking 73 per cent of bets placed on the outcome have backed the Conservatives to overtake the SNP in Aberdeen South. The party’s odds have shortened from 2/1 to 11/8, increasing their implied probability of victory from 33 per cent to 42 per cent.

The movement suggests growing confidence among bettors that the Conservatives could mount a serious challenge in what had previously been regarded as a comfortable SNP contest.

While the Nationalists remain the bookmakers’ favourites and continue to lead the market overall, their position has noticeably weakened as support for their rivals gathers momentum.

The shift will be closely watched by party strategists across Scotland, with the by-election increasingly being viewed as an important test of voter sentiment ahead of future national contests.

For the SNP, victory would provide reassurance that the party remains resilient despite mounting political pressures and heightened competition from unionist parties.

For the Conservatives, a strong performance — or an outright win — would be seized upon as evidence that voters are increasingly willing to abandon the Nationalists in key battleground seats.

Betting markets are far from a perfect predictor of election outcomes, but they are often regarded as a useful indicator of changing perceptions during a campaign. The latest movement suggests that confidence in an SNP victory is no longer as solid as it once appeared.

With little more than a week remaining before voters go to the polls, the contest is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched by-elections in Scotland this year.
