Russia has given a nuclear warning “if western countries try to test our resolve” and outlined two “hypothetical scenarios” which will trigger lethal weapons.

However on Tuesday Russian diplomat Alexander Trofimov denied that Russia will use nuclear weapons against Ukraine whilst speaking at the nuclear non-proliferation conference.

He said this is “utterly unfounded, detached from reality and unacceptable,” but did acknowledge they could use nuclear weapons “in response to weapons of mass destruction or a conventional weapons attack that threatened the existence of the Russian state.”

Trofimov added, “None of these two hypothetical scenarios is relevant to the situation in Ukraine” and accused NATO of “fierce hybrid confrontation” against Russia which now “dangerously balances on the edge of an open military clash.”

He warned, that “Such a move would be able to trigger one of the two emergency scenarios described in our doctrine.

“We obviously stand for preventing this, but if western countries try to test our resolve, Russia will not back down.”

Russia has accused the US of playing a direct role in Ukraine and are “directly responsible” for rocket attacks in the Donbas following intercepted calls between Ukrainian officials.

A spokesperson for Moscow’s defence ministry, Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov, said the US are approving targets for American-made HIMARS rocket systems.

Konashenkov said, “It is the Biden administration that is directly responsible for all rocket attacks approved by Kyiv on residential areas and civilian infrastructure facilities in settlements of Donbas and other regions that caused mass deaths of civilians.”

A Pentagon spokesperson said they have provided Ukrainian forces with “detailed, time-sensitive information to help them understand the threats they face and defend their country against Russian aggression.”
