According to new information from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the UK has now overtaken Italy’s death toll and the highest in Europe.
ONS data shows that there was 29,710 coronavirus deaths up to 24 April in England and Wales, this includes 5,890 in care homes.
The death toll in Italy stands at 29,079, and the ONS total is 34% higher than government figures which stands at 22,173.
The ONS base their figures on death certificates that have Covid-19 recorded. The Department for Health records their figures based on when Covid-19 deaths are recorded.
