The former head of MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service Sir Alex Younger has warned that Donald Trump’s peace plan makes Ukraine a “juicy target” for another invasion in the future.
Sir Alex said the US President’s plan is “lopsided” which will only benefit Vladimir Putin and it will “almost guarantee” yet another invasion.
Donald Trump is trying to convince Kyiv to back his 28-point plan and sell parts of Ukraine to Moscow, reduce their army and not to join NATO.
Trump’s plan will see Vladimir Putin having full ownership of Donetsk and Luhansk which will receive international recognition including Crimea.
Ukraine will also be banned from owning long-range missiles and the best fighting units would have to de disbanded, which will make it easier for Putin to launch another attack in the future more successful.
US Senator Angus King said the plan is similar to that of Neville Chamberlain’s Munich Pact in 1938 with Adolf Hitler.
He said, “It rewards aggression. This is pure and simple.
There’s no ethical, legal, moral, political justification for Russia claiming eastern Ukraine.”
The former MI6 chief said it is “obvious” that Kyiv cannot agree to Washington’s terms, but it should be used as a “negotiating framework.”
Sir Alex said, “In the end it is about an Ukraine that is sovereign and can defend itself and that is much more important. The idea that Ukraine’s army is limited to the point that it cannot defend itself is an absolute non starter.”
He said there is a “critical weakness” in Washington’s approach and that “more pressure” should be placed on Russia “not less.”
