Theresa May has arrived in Europe in a desperate scramble to salvage her Brexit deal after postponing a major parliamentary vote on the UK-EU age agreement.Â
Faced with a heavy defeat for her Brexit plan in parliament, May chose to call off the vote and play for time.Â
Despite stark warnings from the EU that it will not revisit the core points of the deal on the table, May will meet Germany’s Angela Merkel and Dutch leader Mark Rutte as part of her effort to secure “reassurances” on what the agreement does and does not mean.
Meanwhile, in Westminster, an emergency debate is set to take place over the cancellation of the vote. The leadership of the opposition Labour Party is coming under pressure from its own ranks to call a vote of confidence in the government, and the buzz around a possible second referendum is growing.
