Sony and Amazon have pulled out of the worlds largest tech show, Mobile World Congress 2020 (MWC) in Barcelona due to the risk of coronavirus.

MWC are expecting around 100,000 people to attend, they said are “monitoring the evolving situation” of the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement Sony said, Sony has been closely monitoring the evolving situation following the novel coronavirus outbreak, which was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization on 30 January, 2020.

“As we place the utmost importance on the safety and well-being of our customers, partners, media and employees, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from exhibiting and participating at MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.

“The Sony press conference will now instead take place at the scheduled time of 8:30am (CET) on 24 February, 2020 as a video via our official Xperia YouTube channel to share our exciting product news.

“Sony would like to thank everyone for their understanding and ongoing support during these challenging times.”

US chip company Nvidia South Korea’s LG Electronics, Sweden’s telecoms company Ericsson have all withdrawn from the tech conference.

The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), who organises the annual MWC expressed “regret” that Ericsson has pulled out of the tech conference.

GSMA said, “The GSMA regret to see Ericsson’s decision not to attend MWC Barcelona this year as they are an important player in our ecosystem.

“We respect their decision and are reassured by their commitment that they will be at MWC Barcelona 2021 in full force and our rebook trends for next year’s event remain high.

“Ericsson’s cancellation will have some impact on our presence at this time and will potentially have further impact.”

The Swedish telecoms giant said in a statement, “Ericsson appreciates that GSMA have done everything they can to control the risk.

“However, as one of the largest exhibitors, Ericsson has thousands of visitors in its hall each day and even if the risk is low, the company cannot guarantee the health and safety of its employees and visitors.”

Despite the global tech giants having pulled out of MWC 2020 some 2,800 companies will still host stalls at the tech conference in Barcelona between 24 and 27 February.
