On Sunday a mushroom cloud was seen after Russian forces blew up a gas pipe line in the Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv which is home to around 1.5 million people, the Ukrainian President’s office confirms.
The State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection warned the explosion, which it said looked like a “mushroom cloud,” could cause an “environmental catastrophe.”
The department has warned all residents to cover their windows with “damp cloth or gauze” and to “drink plenty of fluids.”
This morning a Ukrainian official said Russian forces were fighting in the streets of Kharkiv and a few hours after a nearby gas pipeline was blown up.
Ukraine’s top prosecutor, Iryna Venediktova, said Russian troops have been unable to take Kharkiv, where “a fierce battle is under way.”
