Huge 6.7 magnitude earthquake hits Crete

A huge 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Greek Island of Crete on Saturday afternoon just after 2pm.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of between 10 and 16km below the Mediterranean Sea, with no tsunami alert.

@Alertes Info wrote: “Earthquake off Crete. Magnitude revised to 6.6. Very strong for the region. No tsunami alert.”

The quake was felt as far away as Albania and the Middle East, and Athens Geodynamic Institute confirmed the earthquake struck about 55 km south of the city of Ierapetra.
