Joe Biden has launched a blistering attack on Donald Trump, accusing the US President of siding with Vladimir Putin over America’s closest allies and leaving NATO weaker at a time when Russia continues its war against Ukraine.
In one of his rare public appearances since leaving office in 2025, Biden used a Democratic Party fundraising gala in Maryland to deliver a scathing assessment of Trump’s foreign policy, claiming it has damaged America’s global leadership and handed strategic advantages to the Kremlin.
“It’s not just his deliberate distortion and destruction of NATO and his choosing Putin over American allies,” Biden said.
He added that Trump had “diminished our standing in the eyes of the world more than any president in history has.
The extraordinary intervention comes as the Trump administration struggles to deliver the Ukraine peace deal the President repeatedly promised.
Despite months of diplomatic efforts, negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv remain deadlocked, with both sides refusing to compromise on key territorial demands.
At the same time, Washington has dramatically reduced its military and financial support for Ukraine, leaving European nations to shoulder an increasing share of the burden in helping Kyiv resist Russia’s invasion.
The White House’s foreign policy priorities have also shifted towards the Middle East following conflict with Iran, pushing Ukraine further down America’s agenda.
Trump has also repeatedly clashed with NATO allies during his second term, raising fresh doubts about Washington’s long-term commitment to the alliance.
His criticism of European defence spending and reported threats to reconsider America’s role within NATO have fuelled concerns across the alliance at a time of heightened tensions with Russia.
Biden argued that those divisions risk strengthening Putin’s hand by undermining Western unity.
The former president’s intervention highlights the growing political divide in the United States over America’s role in Europe and its support for Ukraine.
With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, Democrats are expected to make national security and NATO central campaign issues, arguing that continued Western unity remains essential to deterring Russian aggression.
The speech also marks Biden’s most direct criticism of Trump since leaving office, signalling that the battle over America’s foreign policy is set to become one of the defining issues of the next election campaign.
As Russia’s war grinds on and NATO faces its greatest security challenge in decades, Biden’s accusation that Trump is “choosing Putin over America’s allies” is likely to become one of the most politically explosive attacks of the campaign.
