Wales extends lockdown amid new mutant variant

The Welsh First Minister has extended the lockdown to strengthen their defences against the new mutant variant of the virus.

Mark Drakeford warned that the new variant of the virus has struck “every aspect of Welsh life,” and the lockdown will continue for three weeks.

Speaking to Sky News Drakeford said that Wales is in “a better position” than it was.

He the warned, “We are facing a new strain of coronavirus, we know it is spreading here in Wales and we have got to strengthen our defences against it in every aspect of Welsh life.

“Everything is being done to make sure the defences against the new strain of this virus are as strong as they can be.”

Drakeford said that the vaccination rollout in Wales is being “stepped up in the weeks ahead.”
