The US President has claimed that he will know within two minutes if Vladimir Putin is serious about wanting to end his war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump said the meeting in Alaska with Putin on Friday is a “feel-out meeting” to work out if the Russian dictator wants the war finished.
Trump told reporters, “We’re going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin and, probably in the first two minutes, I’ll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made.”
Trump said that he will order Putin, “You’ve got to end this war, you’ve got to end it.
Speaking from the White House the US President said the talks “will be good, but it might be bad,” he vowed, “I’m here for one reason, to get rid of a war that somebody else started.
Responding to Trump’s comments, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said there will be “normalisation of bilateral relations between the two countries.”
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky will not attend the meeting on Friday, Trump said, “Ultimately, I’m going to put the two of them [Putin and Zelensky] in a room.”
I would say he could go, but he’s gone to a lot of meetings, he’s been there for three and a half years and nothing happened,” Trump added.
The US President will hold a phone call with EU leaders with Zelensky on Wednesday in preparation for his meeting with Putin.
Trump said the call will be with EU leaders “who I get along with very well.”
On Monday he said, “I’ve said that a few times and I’ve been disappointed because I’d have a great call with him [Putin] and then missiles would be lobbed into Kyiv or some other place.
He added, “I’d like to see a ceasefire, I’d like to see the best deal that could be made for both parties, it takes two to tango.
