Tories annihilated and acted ‘as if we are entitled to your vote’

5th Jul 24 7:02 am

The Conservative Party has been annihilated in the general election with the worst votes ever seen and completely lost all votes in Wales.

The former Tory Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that the Conservatives have “let down” the country as she secured her seat in Fareham and Waterlooville.

Braverman won 36,459 votes and the Labour candidate Gemma Furnivall received just 10,374.

Braverman said, “I want to briefly address the result in the rest of the country. And there is only one thing that I can say. Sorry.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry that my party didn’t listen to you. The Conservative Party has let you down.

“You, the great British people, voted for us over 14 years and we did not keep our promises.”

Braverman slammed the former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and said the Conservative acted “as if we are entitled to your vote.”

She is angry and said, “We’ve acted as if we’re entitled to your vote, regardless of what we did, regardless of what we didn’t do. Despite promising time after time that we would do those things.

“And we need to learn our lesson. Because if we don’t, as bad as tonight has been for my party, we’ll have many worse nights to come.”

She added, “I will do everything in my power to rebuild trust. We need to listen to you, and you have spoken to us very clearly.”

Sunak conceded his defeat to Sir Keir Starmer and said that it has been a “difficult night” for the Conservatives.

In a speech the former Tory Prime Minister said, “Could I start by thanking the returning officer and all the people working at the polling station today. You make our democracy possible.

“I would also like to thank the police who ensure we can conduct this ballot in North Yorkshire but also across the country in safety.

“On this difficult night I would like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support.

“Since I have moved here a decade ago, you have made me and my family feel so at home and I look forward to serving you for years to come.

“I am grateful to my agent and team and congratulate my opponents here for their energetic and good natured campaign.

“The Labour Party has won this General Election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.

“Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with good will on all sides and that is something we should be grateful for. The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight and there is much to learn and reflect on.

“I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard working Conservative candidates who have lost, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and dedication to their communities, I am sorry.

“I will now travel down to London where I will say more about tonight’s result before I leave the job for which I have given my all. I look forward to spending more time with you all in the weeks, months and years ahead. Thank you.”
