PayPoint lets people pre-pay for energy at shops and supermarkets. Following reports on Saturday 21 July that PayPoint terminals across the country went down, leaving many households without gas or electricity, Rt Hon. Nicky Morgan MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, has written to Dominic Taylor, Chief Executive of PayPoint.

Morgan has asked Mr Taylor to explain what went wrong, how long services were down for, and whether customers or merchants will be entitled to compensation from PayPoint.

Commenting on the correspondence, Morgan said: “The latest in a growing list of financial services IT failures has left thousands of households – many of them financially vulnerable – without gas or electricity.

“PayPoint failed to acknowledge the problem publicly until the end of the day. It’s concerning that it does not grasp the impact of service disruption on its customers.

“I have asked Mr Taylor to explain to the Committee what went wrong. If we’re not satisfied with the response, we may consider asking him to provide oral evidence.”
