So, you’ve decided to move to another home. You’re happy and excited about your new place and what it has to offer. But wait, you didn’t account for the stressful task of packing all your belongings and moving your entire life from one place to another. Moving can be a hassle and often at times it’s difficult to know where to start first. Should you pack first? Should you check your home state before handing it to the landlord or new owners? The list of questions are endless!

Worry not, with these helpful tips below, your moving tasks panic will subside… eventually! Below are some of the must-do tasks you need to get done before the big move.

DIY move or hire movers?

One of the biggest questions you need to ask yourself is how exactly will you pack up and move your things. Will you take your time packing your own belongings, hire a moving truck and drive yourself to your new place? Or will you hire a moving company to do this big task for you? Research your options, compare moving expenses and weigh the pros and cons before you make that decision. You can always ask your friends to help you pack over some pizza and make a day out of it. Or if you can afford it, choose a reliable moving company with great and trusted reviews.

Get rid of unnecessary belongings

Ask yourself the famous Marie Kondo question: “does this bring me joy?” If it doesn’t, then leave it out of the “new apartment” pile. Rummage through all your belongings, create your “no” pile, and decide what to do with it. You can either donate it to goodwill or hold a garage sale and make a few extra bucks to help with moving expenses.

Efficient and eco-friendly packing

Skip out on the cardboard boxes and bubble wrap and opt for a moving company that provides you with sturdy boxes with attachable lids instead. It’s cheaper and environmentally friendly. Other companies use wardrobe boxes that can save you time on packing your clothes. They’re just skypetaken with their hangers from your old closet and put in your new closet good as new!

Tackle maintenance tasks and utilities switch

A few service tasks need to be taken care of as you move like contacting your current service providers and setting up a switch service on your home phone line, internet and cable. Make sure all your services are set up at your new place. Also, be sure to update your address with your bank and work. Another task that needs attention is maintenance around your old home. Check if anything is run-down here or there and be sure to fix it. It’s also wise to do a thorough clean-up of your old home before you leave. Loads of companies provide end of tenancy cleaning so you won’t have to do it yourself and leave all your energy for cleaning up your new home.

Start your new chapter at ease

Relax, the hard part is almost over. Create checklists for each and every task before moving day arrives and make sure moving day is a stress-free day. Soon, you’ll be curled up on your couch in your new place with some unpacking to do. But that’s a task for another day. You are home.
