Greggs the bakery chain has said their vegan sausage rolls have boosted sales and strong growth was also seen in new hot food options, coffee and breakfast.

In the 26 weeks to 29 June pre-tax profits rose by more than 52% to £36.7m, whilst total sales were up by 14.7% to £546m.

Chief executive Roger Whiteside said, “Given the strength of our year to date and the outlook, we have decided to increase investment in strategic initiatives in the second half of the year to help to deliver an even stronger customer proposition and further growth in the years ahead.

“Our expectations for underlying profits for the year as a whole remain unchanged.”

A “disorderly exit” from the EU will have a negative impact on bakery chain including consumer demand and the supply chain, the company are to stockpile on key ingredients, Greggs said.
