Punters are continuing to back the Green Party heavily ahead of next month’s Holborn and St Pancras by-election, despite bookmakers continuing to price Labour as the favourite to retain the seat.
Betting markets have shown substantial support for Green leader Zack Polanski, who was formally selected as the party’s candidate last week for the October 8 contest.
Recent figures showed 64 per cent of bets placed over the previous week backed the Greens, although Labour remained the bookmaker’s favourite at 2/5.
The figures underline the contrast between market pricing and the distribution of bets, with substantial punter interest in a potential Green breakthrough.
The constituency, formerly represented by Sir Keir Starmer, has traditionally been a Labour stronghold. The by-election is being closely watched as a test of the party’s support under Prime Minister Andy Burnham and of the Greens’ recent electoral momentum.
