Aldi announces new pay rates for store employees

Aldi has strengthened its position as the UK’s best-paying supermarket after increasing the minimum hourly rates of pay for store colleagues.

Store Assistants at the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket will earn minimum hourly rates of £9.10 nationally and £10.55 inside the M25, effective from 1st February – rising to £10.41 after three years nationally and £10.89 in London. They previously earned £8.85 and £10.20 respectively.

The increase in pay rates follows Aldi’s total sales in the UK & Ireland breaking the £12bn barrier for the first time in 2018.

Aldi’s new national rate of pay exceeds the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended ‘real living wage’ rate of £9.00 per hour nationally and matches the £10.55 per hour rate recommended for workers inside the M25.

All Store Assistants will also receive an enhanced employer pension contribution, which coupled with the fact that Aldi is one of the few supermarkets to still pay colleagues for breaks cements its position as the UK’s best-paying supermarket.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer for Aldi UK, said: “Our store colleagues do a fantastic job every day and the excellent service they provide to customers is a key reason why we are the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket.

“We’re committed to being the best supermarket employer in Britain and this means rewarding our colleagues for the excellent job they do with market-leading rates of pay and opportunities to progress their career at Aldi.”
