UK records more than 17,000 new infections in 24 hours

The UK has recorded 17,234 more coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, which is up from 13,972 on Monday.

A further 143 people have died with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which brings the UK’s total death toll to 43,018, and the total number of cases to 634,920.

The last time the UK recorded more than 100 deaths was 10 June.

All the patients had underlying health conditions and were aged between 72 and 86, and patients with no health conditions were aged between 30 and 96-years old.

According to official figures, there has been a rise of registered deaths involving coronavirus across England and Wales for a fourth week in a row.

In the week ending 2 October, there was a total of 321 Covid related deaths, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed.
