The government are recording an average of 1,138 coronavirus cases each day. In mid-July cases fell to 540, since then the infection rate has more than doubled.

On Thursday there was 1,522 confirmed new cases, which is the highest in almost 11 weeks, but doctors insist the rise in the numbers is due to more testing in higher infected areas.

Since last Friday coronavirus cases have risen every day. On 12 June there were 1,541 confirmed cases, which was three weeks before lockdown started to ease.

A further 12 people died within 28 days of their first positive test for COVID-19, taking the UK’s cumulative death toll to 41,477.
