UK now has 163 confirmed cases of coronavirus

Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed there are now 47 new cases of coronavirus in less than 24 hours in England, with five new cases in Scotland bringing the total in the UK to 163.

The Scottish Government confirmed two people have tested positive for coronavirus in Fife and one each in Grampian, Forth Valley and Lothian health board areas, the highest rise so far in Scotland in one day.

Health officials have said they have tested 20,338 in the UK with 20,175 testing negative.

Britain’s top government scientific advisor has warned today that the coronavirus outbreak has started in Britain, and the virus is now spreading person to person in the UK.

Sir Patrick Vallance said the true numbers of those infected is certainly much higher as “This is a global epidemic and we would expect to see more cases in the UK.”

He told Sky News on Friday morning “this is the start of an outbreak, clearly” across the UK.

Sir Patrick said, “We are in the position now where we have got person-to-person transmission of this in the UK and therefore we can expect more cases.

“This is now outbreaks in the community where we have got some individuals that we don’t know where it has come from and therefore that tells you that something is circulating.

“We are definitely in that phase.”

On Friday, It is understood that a second person in England has died from coronavirus, the patient was in their 80s and had underlying health problems at a Milton Keynes Hospital.

Patients on the ward were isolated this morning  and a deep clean was carried out, the Milton Keynes Citizen reported.

Britain’s first death from the deadly coronavirus was confirmed on Thursday afternoon. The man had tested positive on Wednesday evening and has now died as he had “underlying health conditions.”
