Sirius Minerals, the company behind plans for a £4bn potash mine in North Yorkshire,is considering a takeover bid by Anglo American.

Henri Murrison, director of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, tells the Today programme that the project could be considered the largest infrastructure project in the Northern Powerhouse, and even in the UK at the moment.

He dismisses claims that there had been local opposition to the project, which runs under a national park: “It’s probably the most popular project I’ve ever come across in terms of its impact. People who live in Scarborough and the surrounding areas in Whitby don’t have access to good quality jobs often.”

He added: “Other than the public sector, there are very few employers. This is a significant boost to the economy which has the lowest median wages of any town in the country.”
