A senior minister has said the new Chancellor of the Exchequer could delay the 11 March Budget to give himself more time to prepare.

After Sajid Javid’s shock resignation last week the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said ministers have not been told if the budget is going ahead as planned on 11 March.

Speaking on Sky News’s Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme, Shapps said, “I know that the Budget plans are well advanced but I also know that Rishi Sunak, the new Chancellor may want time.

“I haven’t heard whether the date of March is confirmed as yet. He is probably looking at it, I should think this week.”
