Whilst Theresa May is appealing to the 27 EU leaders to delay Brexit until 30 June in Brussels on Thursday, a petition calling for the government to revoke Article 50 has crashed the petitions website.
So far, more than 800,000 people across the UK has signed the petition, which is calling for support to remain in the EU.
If the petition surpasses 100,000 signatures the law says Parliament will have to debate the subject in the House of Commons.
After May’s address to the nation on Wednesday evening, activity for the petition saw increased activity.
May blamed MPs for failing to implement the result of the 2016 EU referendum, she told frustrated voters “I am on your side,” this has caused a backlash as thousands took to Twitter crating a new hashtag #NotOnMySide.
Celebrity figures including Jennifer Saunders, Hugh Grant, TV presenter Caitlin Moran, and former Labour press chief Alastair Cambell are urging the public to sign the petition.
Grant wrote on Twittter, “I’ve signed. And it looks like every sane person in the country is signing too. National emergency.”

The petition reads, “The Government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people.’
“We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now for remaining in the EU. A People’s Vote may not happen – so vote now.”
