Lord Tony Hall has announced he is to step down after serving seven years at the helm of the BBC in the summer.

Lord Hall felt it is important the BBC has the same director general for the mid-term review in 2022 and then the renewal charter in 2027.

He said his decision to leave was hard, he said, “If I followed my heart I would genuinely never want to leave.”

Sir David Clementi the chairman of the BBC said “within the next few weeks” the search will start to replace Lord Hall.

He added, the BBC are “committed to selecting the best qualified person for the job.”
