Kate Forbes is no longer the favourite to take over as leader of the SNP after her odds drifted to 10/3 from 5/6 following a backlash over her comments on equal marriage.

The race to replace Nicola Sturgeon now has a new favourite after the odds on Humza Yousaf leading the SNP have been slashed to 4/7 from 6/1.

Ash Regan follows the leading pair at 7/2, while 28-year-old Mhairi Black is 14/1, Joanne Cherry 20/1 and Stewart Hosie 50/1.

Betfair – Next permanent leader of the SNP

Humza Yousaf 4/7 (was 6/1)

Kate Forbes 10/3 (was 5/6)

Ash Regan 7/2

Mhairi Black 14/1

Joanne Cherry 20/1

Stewart Hosie 50/1

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said, “There’s been plenty of change at the top of the market in the race to replace Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader.

“Following Angus Robertson’s withdrawal from proceedings, Kate Forbes was the 5/6 front-runner but her odds have drifted to 10/3 following a backlash over her recent comments on equal marriage.

“That’s opened the door to support in the betting for Humza Yousaf, who is the current 4/7 favourite to be the next party leader having previously been 6/1 before Forbes’ comments.”
