Amazon storms into $3 trillion club as AI gold rush sends shares soaring

Amazon has joined the exclusive $3 trillion club as investors bet that the e-commerce giant is emerging as one of the biggest winners from the global artificial intelligence boom.

The Nasdaq-listed company became only the fifth business in history to surpass the milestone, joining technology titans including Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia and Alphabet as markets continue to pour capital into companies driving the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Amazon shares surged 5 per cent to a record $284.02 in New York, marking the company’s strongest single-day gain since 2012.

The rally lifted Amazon’s market value above $3 trillion (£2.23 trillion) after investors responded positively to stronger cloud growth and increased spending plans aimed at expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities.

The company’s latest performance helped ease fears that major technology groups could begin scaling back their enormous AI investments. Instead, Amazon and other hyperscalers signalled that the race to build AI infrastructure remains in full swing.

“Amazon is probably the most emblematic of the economy right now. It’s a consumer story and it’s an AI story,” said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide.

The surge reflects a dramatic turnaround in investor sentiment. Amazon shares have climbed more than 23 per cent since the start of the year and recorded their strongest three-day performance in more than 15 years.

Chief executive Andy Jassy highlighted the strength of the company’s AI and semiconductor operations, saying both businesses had exceeded annualised revenue rates of $25 billion. He also pointed to record delivery speeds for Prime customers, with more than 40 per cent more items delivered on the same day or overnight compared with previous periods.

Despite the breakthrough, Amazon remains behind the largest technology companies by valuation. Apple and Nvidia have both reached around $5 trillion at recent peaks, while Microsoft remains valued above $3.5 trillion.

The latest milestone underlines how artificial intelligence has transformed the fortunes of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies — turning investment in chips, cloud computing and data centres into the defining market story of the decade.
