The UK is actively preparing a second naval vessel for deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, as confirmed by officials from the Ministry of Defence.

Previously, it was announced that HMS Dragon, a formidable Type 45 destroyer, is being equipped and readied for its mission in the region.

In addition, the Ministry has now disclosed that RFA Lyme Bay, a Bay-class support ship, is also being mobilised for specific maritime operations in the Eastern Mediterranean.

This decision to enhance naval presence is significant, particularly as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.

The situation has prompted NATO allies, including the UK, to adopt a heightened state of military readiness in response to ongoing conflicts and potential threats in the area.

The deployment of these vessels underscores the UK’s commitment to regional security and its role in supporting international maritime operations during times of uncertainty.

An MoD spokesperson said: “As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to heightened readiness as a precaution, should she be needed to assist in maritime tasks in the Eastern Mediterranean.
