Boris Johnson is set to make an announcement later today in the Commons after he admitted on Monday the situation over Russia and the Ukraine looks “pretty gloomy.”

Fears of a Russian invasion are growing as tensions are escalating quickly which led to Johnson holding a virtual meeting last night with US, Italy, Poland, France, Germany leaders and the European Council, the European Commission and NATO.

The virtual meeting was to discuss how the European leaders and NATO will respond and to take all the steps to “prevent” a Russian invasion.

A Downing Street spokesperson said after the meeting, “The leaders agreed on the importance of international unity in the face of growing Russian hostility.

“The Prime Minister underlined the real human cost of any Russian aggression and the need to take all steps within our power to prevent that outcome.

“The leaders stressed that diplomatic discussions with Russia remain the first priority, and welcomed talks that have already taken place between Russia and NATO allies.”

The official added, “The leaders agreed that, should a further Russian incursion into Ukraine happen, allies must enact swift retributive responses including an unprecedented package of sanctions.

“They resolved to continue coordinating closely on any such response.”

NATO has sent additional war ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe as tensions grow in Europe for all out war in the Ukraine.

NATO has also placed all forces on standby and said, they are “reinforcing the Allied deterrence and defence as Russia continues its military build-up in and around Ukraine.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, “I welcome Allies contributing additional forces to NATO.

“NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to protect and defend all Allies, including by reinforcing the eastern part of the Alliance.

“We will always respond to any deterioration of our security environment, including through strengthening our collective defence.”
