A scientist who advises the government has he cannot see the logic behind the Prime Minister’s decision to place millions into the draconian Tier 4 restrictions.
Professor Robert Dingwall, who sits on the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG), said that they presented the evidence to the government which show that the new more contagious strain of the virus, has been “identified all over the UK anyway.”
Professor Dingwall told LBC Radio on Monday, that NERVTAG “would be surprised to see a document that was drafted and unanimously adopted which expressed moderate confidence in the existence of a potential problem was transformed over the course of 24 hours into a national panic.”
He further revealed that NERVTAG “made no particular recommendations” to the government over implementing Tier 4 measures.
He did acknowledged that “London and the South East are a particular hotspot” and said he finds it “very hard to see the logic” in the government imposing Tier 4 in these areas, as “significant numbers of cases were being found all over the country a week, 10 days ago.”
The government scientific advisor added, “The genie is out of the bottle.
“It’s the same frankly with Europe, the only reason many European countries have not recognised the presence of this variant is that they haven’t looked for it.”
The Professor said that the new variant is likely to “out compete other strains” of the virus which could become dominant globally.
