Deal of the day
The Netherlands-based organic and natural food group Wessanen has strengthened its presence in the gluten-free market with the acquisition of the British food and snack maker Mrs Crimble’s.
Founded over 30 years ago, Mrs Crimble’s – perhaps best known for its macaroons – specialises in the manufacture of gluten-free cakes, biscuits, snacks and treats.
The group, which generated net revenue of £12.7m in 2015, is expected to benefit from the growth in popularity of gluten-free products and demand from both consumers and retailers, with the market for free-from products expected to reach £531m in 2016.
The majority of Mrs Crimble’s sales come from the “sweet-in-between” or healthy snacking category, which is a core market for Wessanen, which owns brands such as Kallo, Whole Earth and Clipper Tea.
Commenting on the deal, Wessanen’s CEO Christophe Barnouin says: “This acquisition will further strengthen our operations in the UK market and gives us an entry into a strategic growth segment”.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
