Drugs giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are together set to develop and manufacture a coronavirus vaccine, the Financial Times revealed today.
Their aim is to build capacity to produce 100m doses by the end of the year if it is shown to be effective.
“We want to be ready to launch and supply up to 100m doses by the end of the year and then expand from there,” Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca chief executive told the FT.
The total UK coronavirus death toll passed 26,000 yesterday, with a further 601 people dying in hospital.
