A further 601 people have died in hospital as a result of coronavirus taking the total to 26,097, as those in care homes have been included in Wednesday’s figures.

England recorded 445 deaths including a 14-year-old without underlying health conditions, whilst Scotland recorded 83 and Wales recorded 73 more deaths.

Northern Ireland recorded a further nine deaths with the total standing at 338.

The government are preparing to publish the country’s death toll for care homes on a daily basis, this could push up the figures substantially.

On Tuesday it was revealed there were 4,343 coronavirus related deaths, which was recorded by care homes in England in the two weeks to 24 April.

It is also further feared that the UK may end up with the highest death toll in Europe.

A frontline NHS nurse has been brutally killed in a “ferocious unprovoked attack” in Canning Town, East London on Sunday evening.

David Gomoh who was 24-years old was stabbed to death after he stepped outside and was talking to a friend on his phone, the Met Police confirmed.

He was “ferociously” attacked at 10:25pm on Sunday evening on Freemasons Road E16, his death comes days after his father died from coronavirus.

Detective Inspector Tony Kirk, of the Mets Specialist Crime Command, said Gomoh’s family “deserve both answers and justice” for the callous attack.
