The French government has placed eighteen million people into a 9pm curfew as the country has declared a “state of health emergency.”

Nine cities including Paris are banned from meeting friends, bars, pubs and restaurants between 9pm and 6am from Saturday.

French President Emmanuel Macron said these new measures will be in place for at least four weeks, and more details will be announced later on Thursday.

There are no restriction on public transport or movement between different areas, however anyone caught breaking the curfew will be fine €135.

France recorded 22,591 more cases on Wednesday and more than 9,100 people are in hospital.

The curfew will apply to Ile-de-France and eight metropolitan areas including Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Saint Etienne and Toulouse.

President Macron said the “second wave” is “worrying,” but we have not “lost control,” and he said that France will “get through this together.”
