Donald Trump has ordered the release of government files on UFOs and possible extraterrestrial life, emphasizing transparency to foster public trust amid the “tremendous interest” in the subject.
The US President said he is directing the Pentagon and other federal agencies to declassify material linked to “alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)”, sparking curiosity about what might be revealed.
The bombshell move came just hours after Trump accused former president Barack Obama of disclosing “classified information” during a recent podcast interview, raising questions about how declassification might impact national security and government transparency.
Trump told reporters onboard Air Force One, “I don’t know if they’re real or not.”
He added of Obama, “I may get him out of trouble by declassifying.”
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump pledged to release “any other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters”, with details on the expected timeline and process for public access to these files.
Obama had suggested in a podcast appearance that, statistically, the vast size of the universe makes the existence of alien life likely.
However, he later clarified he had seen no evidence that extraterrestrials “have made contact with us”.
Speculation intensified this week after Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, claimed the President had a speech prepared on aliens that he would deliver at the “right time”.
But the White House appeared blindsided.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt laughed off the suggestion, telling reporters:
“A speech on aliens would be news to me.”
Public fascination with UFOs reignited in 2017 when leaked US Navy videos published by The New York Times and Politico showed unidentified objects hovering near military aircraft.
The revelations led Congress to hold its first UFO hearings in 50 years in May 2022. Officials later suggested some sightings — including green triangular shapes seen above a Navy ship — were likely drones.
In July 2022, the Pentagon created the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to centralise investigations into military UFO encounters.
Now, with Trump ordering files to be opened, the alien debate is set to flare up all over again, creating anticipation for new disclosures and insights.
