The department of health has confirmed that a third person has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

Two other patients who are confirmed with coronavirus are still being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary infectious diseases centre in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England said, “A further patient has tested positive for coronavirus bringing the total number of cases in the UK to three.

“The individual did not acquire this in the UK.

“The patient is being transferred to a specialist NHS centre, and we are using robust infection control measures to prevent any possible further spread of the virus.

“The NHS is well prepared to manage these cases and we are now working quickly to identify any contacts the patient has had.”

As of Thursday China has reported over 28,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus with the death toll rising to 565, mostly in China.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, outside mainland China there has been 28 confirmed cases in Europe with 218 cases elsewhere in the world.
