Sir Nigel Wilson is to step down as chief executive of L&G after more than a decade in charge.
In a stock exchange statement the insurance giant said it was considering both internal and external candidates.
Wilson, who joined the group in 2009 as chief financial officer, became chief executive in 2012.
Legal & General chair Sir John Kingman said: “Nigel has successfully navigated significant geopolitical changes as well as challenges in the regulatory and market environments of each of our core businesses and has steered the group into a position of strength.”
