The Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for standards over claims he failed to properly declare outside earnings and gifts.

The Parliamentary website shows Sir Keir is being investigated by the watchdog which was opened on the 8 June.

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone is investigating the Labour leader and the first matter under investigation is stated as: “Registration of interests under Category 1 of the Guide to the Rules (Employment and earnings).”

And the second, “Registration of interests under Category 3 of the Guide to the Rules (Gifts, benefits and hospitality from UK sources).”

Sir Keir is already under an investigation by Durham Police for a separate issue over allegations he broke lockdown rules in April 2021.

In April 2021 Labour MPs and staff held a meeting during the by-election campaign and Durham Police are yet to decide if this work meeting broke the rules which were in place at the time.

Sir Keir has insisted that this did not breach the rules as eating with staff during a working day was allowed at the time and has pledged to resign if he is fined by Durham Police.

A spokesperson for the Labour leader said Sir Keir had “already apologised” after “administrative errors in his office… led to a small number of late declarations.”

During a visit to Wakefield, the Labour leader told reporters, “My office is dealing with it and will be replying in due course.”

When asked if he was sure he had done nothing wrong, Sir Keir responded, “Absolutely confident, there’s no problem here.”
