Russia is operating a secret military laboratory where human subjects are allegedly used in experiments to refine chemical and biological weapons, independent investigators and Western defence experts has said.
Reports claim the programme is centred on the State Research Institute of Military Medicine, a Russian military facility said to be authorised to conduct tests on live volunteers.
Investigators allege that hundreds of people, many from low-income backgrounds, have been recruited with large cash payments to take part in experiments involving toxins, medicines and vaccines, the Express reported.
Former British Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Regiment commander Hamish de Bretton-Gordon said the allegations were consistent with Moscow’s record during the war in Ukraine.
He claimed the programme appeared to target vulnerable groups, including poorer Russians and prisoners offered financial incentives.
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon OBE told The Sun that the revelations align with established state actions: “He has already fed countless troops into his meat grinder, leaving over 1.5 million Russian casualties.
“The value of life in Russia is not how we understand it in the UK and the West.
“If they think they can get the best tests by using humans, they seem pretty happy to do it.”
He added: “It is not dissimilar to the time where the Nazis considered some people of less value than others.
The allegations emerge as Britain imposed sanctions on seven Russian scientists and two research institutes linked to the development of toxic agents including Novichok.
Ukrainian officials have also accused Russian forces of using chemical agents thousands of times since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, claims Moscow denies.
Security experts fear that as the war continues, Russia could seek to expand its use of chemical and biological capabilities, raising concerns about future battlefield escalation.
Hamish continued: “We are in a hybrid war with Russia.
“Biological and chemical weapons are something we need to be on top of. The Russian bear is severely wounded – and a wounded animal is always at its most dangerous just before it dies.”
The Kremlin has not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
