Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suggested that Parliament could be moving to York whilst the £6bn refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster take place.

Johnson said in a letter that locations outside of London should be considered. He wrote, “Costs should be kept to a minimum [i.e no gold plating]. We should also move as quickly as possible.”

He added, “However, the review should also consider a possible location outside London.

“The government is considering establishing a government hub in York and it would therefore make sense to consider this as a potential location.”

Those involved in the review were told in the letter, “We should also move as quickly as possible, both because of the risks associated with the current state of the building and the need to provide certainty on the way forward and thereby minimise disruption to our business.”
