London is about to witness its first-ever wine car boot fair, thanks to ex-model Ruth Spivey.
Spivey, who’s walked the catwalk for brands including Chanel and Galliano and has featured in a Diet Coke advert, has organised the sale at a car park at London Fields’ Netil Market this Sunday. The main aim is to boost independent traders and help people discover new varieties of wine.
At the wine car boot, local traders will sell different vintages from the back of their vehicles. Tickets cost £15 and include your first 10 tasting samples, plus a glass and wine carrier.
In her 10-year modelling career, Spivey travelled the world, which sparked her interest in the food and drink sector. In the past few years, she’s worked with Michelin-starred restaurants including Soho’s Arbutus and Wild Honey in Mayfair.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard, she said: “I worked as a maître d’ and then I proposed to them that I go in the kitchen and train as a chef, but it didn’t work out for me. All this time I was going to wine tastings, learning about wine. I started my professional wine exams, getting experience in the industry in retail, supply, wholesale, then this year started to go freelance.
“Wine Car Boot is a bit of tasting, a bit of learning, a bit of discovering. Hopefully it’s a fun environment and will help break down barriers. Meeting the people who work in [wine] shops will help, because there are a lot of people who are intimidated to go into shops in case they say something wrong.”
