By the end of this week Japan wants to reach a post-Brexit trade agreement with the UK, before a change in its government.

A trade deal with Japan will go much further than the existing deal with Brussels. Next week Japan will select their new leader after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced he to step down.

A Japanese government official said, “We want to reach a broad agreement on trade talks with Britain this week under Foreign Minister Motegi.”

Another official said, “Otherwise, a trade pact between Japan and Britain may not come into force 1 January next year considering Japan’s political situation.”

The Japanese government official said that if a deal is agreed then this will help Boris Johnson’s government in gaining other deals with other trade talks.

He added, “For both the Japanese and British economies, we should avoid trade negotiations ‘drifting’ without a broad agreement this week.”
